Multiplication is the first obstacle children encounter in math. I am Guyanese, I cried learning my timetables. My sister did too, it just is what it is. As a teacher, I was amazed at the approach to multiplication. For some reason, the American education system thinks that memorizing times tables is not a good thing. That is total foolishness, memorize your timetables. You write them out over and over until you memorize them.
While in graduate school at CCNY for my masters in applied math, I asked my advanced calculus professor Raplh Kopperman about memorization and math – his response was etched in my memory. “With math at a high level we memorize the definitions and work from there.”
